BYOB River Cruise; Great Local Music, Great People & an Amazing Sunset Vista
Written by: Kacie Couch
IT’S MY 21st BIRTHDAY! I understand that this milestone in my life may not mean anything to you but it DOES mean that I FINALLY can go out on the BYOB adult twilight cruise with the Amelia River Cruises. Now, THAT should pique your interest! That’s right, if you like going out, having a good time, listening to great live music, and sipping on your beverage of choice on a BOAT, listen up folks because this is the cruise for you.
The adult BYOB twilight tour is very self-explanatory in its title, which makes it no less awesome. Kids age 21 and above are welcome to buy a ticket, hop aboard the “Bald Eagle” with a drink or cooler filled with any type of beverage, sit back and relax as the boat takes a trip up the river to Cumberland Sound, allowing a beautiful view of both Cumberland Island to the North, and Amelia Island to the South as well as the most gorgeous Florida sunset to the west. Local musicians play their heart out and keep you company on this two hour trip which runs on Friday and Saturday evening until Thanksgiving this year.
This is not a narrated tour, but you’ll be sure to see some cool sights (both historical and ecological) along the way. Floating along the Amelia River as you first pull off the dock you’ll be sure to see many glimpses into our history here on Amelia Island including shell middens left by Amelia’s first inhabitants, the Timacuan indians. You’ll also get a view of Old Town, the original settlement of Fernandina Beach. Perhaps you’ll notice some houses along the northern point of old town with porches on them almost all the way around. These are the houses on Ladies Street and I don’t have to remind you about Fernandina being a port town for you to figure out just what Ladies Street was popular for back in the olden days (Today’s BYOB twilight tours make for better quality entertainment, in my opinion).
If you’re more interested in wildlife, you’re also in luck. You never know what you’ll spot on one of our cruises but you most likely will see dolphins, fish, egrets, herons, osprey, and sometimes even a roseate spoonbill or two, not to mention the wild horses of Cumberland! All of this while relaxing to local musicians playing some Jimmy Buffet tunes and more.
If our tour hasn’t been enough excitement for you in one night, there is always downtown Fernandina to keep you occupied afterwards. Here on Amelia Island we boast the oldest working saloon in Florida at The Palace Saloon on Center Street. There’s also Sheffield’s at the Palace, DogStar Tavern, the Green Turtle, O’Kane’s, the Salty Pelican and even more bars all in less than a three block radius and within walking distance of our dock. There is plenty music in our town and the party doesn’t have to end when you leave our boat!
So drop your kids off with the babysitter, drop by the store and get your favorite beverage and some plastic cups and come celebrate. Now that I am of legal drinking age you certainly will see me there this weekend! Whether you’re 21 or 91, the BYOB twilight tour is always a blast.
See you on the next BYOB twilight tour, everyone!
