Florida’s Bug “Problem”

Florida is known for its bugs, especially this time of year. It’s too bad we always focuses on flys, no-see-ums, mosquitoes, and the dreaded fire ants. Because here on Amelia Island (and even more so on Amelia River Cruises) these are hardly a problem. The lovely ocean breezes are strong enough to deter the most persistent fly. Still they are calm enough for other bugs like butterflies and for us to enjoy them! In fact, they bring beautiful butterflies to our island. Check out Amelia Island’s New Butterfly Garden!

Florida is actually the home of 170 species of butterflies! It’s warm climate and long growing season create an ideal environment for these beautiful critters. Many even remain here, for us to enjoy, year-round.

Butterflies are becoming more and more important to our ecosystem. Like bees they help pollinate fruits, vegetables and other plants. With both species rapidly declining, it’s important that we do our best to protect these beautiful, peaceful creatures.

A Little Bit About this Beautiful Insect

Butterflies have four clear stages of development: egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and butterfly. Because of these stages they are the ideal symbol of transition and growth.  Butterflies have been known to appear when someone is going through a major life change. They challenge us to look more within and see things from a different prospective. Furthermore, a butterflies lighthearted persona combined with their bright coloring bring us joy whenever we catch a glimpse.

The Fernandina Butterfly Garden close to the MarinaHere on Amelia island we are working hard to help and bring about more awareness of butterflies. Fernandina Main Street, in conjunction with Fernandina Beach High School Key Club, a student lead organization that promoted leadership through serving others, has recently opened a butterfly garden in historic downtown Fernandina. It is located in front of the downtown comfort station next to the depot. Basically, across the street from Amelia River Cruises dock!

This project began in early 2018 and was completed in May of this year. It was a joint effort between the above-mentioned government and school bodies, along with donations from local businesses and individuals. Everyone working together was necessary to make this garden a reality. We are all very excited to share the final product with our community and guests!

In order to attract butterflies, the butterfly garden was filled with plants that butterflies need to reproduce and thrive. It is also displaying local art work and informational signage.
